Piezo Passive Buzzer with Frequency Control for Generating Tones, Melodies and Audible Signals in DIY Electronics Projects

The Passive Buzzer is a compact electronic component designed to generate audible signals in various electronic devices, alarm systems and DIY projects. Unlike active buzzers, this model does not contain a built-in signal generator and requires an external control signal with a specific frequency to produce sound.

Sound is generated by applying square wave pulses from a microcontroller or another electronic control circuit. The recommended operating frequency range is 2 kHz – 5 kHz. By changing the input frequency, you can control the sound pitch and create different tones, melodies and musical notes.

This passive buzzer is particularly suitable for projects using Arduino, Raspberry Pi and other microcontrollers. With Arduino, for example, different tones and melodies can be generated using the tone() function, making it an excellent choice for educational electronics projects and experimentation.

The component comes with pre-soldered flexible connecting wires approximately 60mm long, with stripped ends for convenient installation. It is available in different housing sizes and versions with or without mounting ears, allowing installation in electronic enclosures and panels.

Key Features:

  • Passive buzzer without a built-in signal generator.

  • Operated using an external square wave signal.

  • Recommended operating frequency of 2–5 kHz.

  • Supports different tones and melodies.

  • Compatible with Arduino, Raspberry Pi and other microcontrollers.

  • Pre-soldered flexible wires for easy connection.

  • Compact design for integration into electronic devices.

  • Available with or without side mounting ears.

  • Suitable for educational, hobby and professional electronics projects.

Suitable Applications:

  • Arduino and Raspberry Pi projects.

  • Audible alarms and warning systems.

  • Electronic timers and controllers.

  • Household appliances and electronic devices.

  • Toys and educational electronics kits.

  • Error alerts and warning notifications.

  • Button feedback and menu control sounds.

  • Various DIY electronics projects.

Technical Specifications:

  • Type: Passive Buzzer

  • Operating Principle: Piezoelectric sound transducer

  • Built-in Oscillator: No

  • Control Signal: Square Wave Pulses

  • Recommended Frequency: 2–5 kHz

  • Tone Control: By changing the input frequency

  • Compatibility: Arduino, Raspberry Pi and microcontrollers

  • Housing Variants: 1325, 1404 and 1704

  • Mounting Options: With or without side mounting ears

  • Housing Diameter of the Illustrated Model: Φ16.5mm

  • Connection Type: Two pre-soldered wires

  • Wire Colours: Red (+) and Black (-)

  • Cable Length: 60 ±5mm

  • Stripped Wire Length: Approximately 3mm

Connection and Operation:

  • Red Wire (+): Connect to the positive signal terminal of the corresponding control circuit.

  • Black Wire (-): Connect to GND (ground).

  • Control: Apply a suitable square wave signal at the required frequency from a microcontroller or signal generator.

When used with Arduino, the tone() function can generate different frequencies and melodies.

Important: This is a passive buzzer, not an active buzzer. Applying a constant DC voltage alone will not produce a continuous sound. An alternating control signal with an appropriate frequency is required. Unlike active buzzers, it cannot simply be connected directly to a power supply to generate a continuous audible tone.
